Christian groups to deliver food to North Korea

by Ashly McGlone
Religion News Service

A partnership that includes several Christian organizations has reached an agreement with North Korea to deliver strictly monitored food aid to counter the communist country’s severe crop shortage.

The five non-governmental organizations forming the partnership — World Vision, Mercy Corps, Samaritan’s Purse, Global Resource Services and Christian Friends of Korea — have a decade or more experience working in North Korea.

The food assistance comes after an assessment of areas devastated by flooding last August. Ken Isaacs, vice president of program and government relations at Samaritan’s Purse, said the partnership has been allowed “unprecedented access.”

Sixteen representatives from the five NGOs will be living in North Korea to monitor food distribution.

Innovative Leaders Gather to Change the Way the Church Communicates with the World

POMPANO BEACH, Florida (May 27, 2008) - 55 leaders from 49 organizations met last week to “ignite a global movement of visual story for the sake of Christ’s kingdom.”  This unique gathering of Christian leaders convened in response to the need for new ways to contextualize the gospel in an increasingly visual world.

The importance of these leaders, representing mission groups, bible agencies, creative networks, media producers, filmmakers, distributors, universities, churches and television broadcasters, all coming together in one place at one time was not lost on Clyde Taber, Executive Director of the Visual Story Network.  “These participants are among the most innovative thinkers and visual story practitioners in the world.  They understand the need to move beyond ‘preach’ and ‘print’ to ‘portray,’” said Taber.

Significant relationships were created among experts who care deeply about the kingdom and the power of visual story. Shane Sooter, of City on a Hill Productions, said, “I’m still buzzing with the possibilities. The networking and connections alone made it worth my time, but the potential for the future is the real prize.”  The American Bible Society, Youth with a Mission, Highway Video, Asbury College, Sermonspice, SAT 7, Navigators, JESUS Film Project, Book of Hope, Northland Church, Igniter Media, Good News Productions, Hollywood Connect and Mission America were among the organizations involved.

Next steps for the Visual Story Network include a regional event in Dallas in the fall, developing an online networking platform and expanding partnerships with other innovative organizations.  The Visual Story Network is a coalition of missional and creative leaders working together to help the body of Christ more effectively harness the power of story in visual media for the kingdom of God.  The event was hosted by the Book of Hope at the Marie Green Forum for Global Missions in Pompano Beach, Florida.

New Technology Applied to Help Spread the Gospel - Christian Newswire

LITITZ, Penn., May 20 /Christian Newswire/ — The Pocket Testament League, an evangelism ministry established in 1893, has developed a new web-based system to match people who want to share their faith using Scripture, with people who want to anonymously support their efforts.

Through a powerful new use of technology, sponsors can support the work of evangelism right from their computer. They partner with those who have a heart for reaching others with God’s Word, and in turn those who are sharing their faith encourage their sponsors by posting stories about how they are reaching the lost.

New Collaboration App Opens Service to Public

April 15, 2008
By Ted Stevenson

When we received a press release announcing the public release of Dimdim, a new open-source tool for online meetings, it caught our eye, since we’ve been testing some similar products of late.

In a move that will give you some idea of how disruptive this technology may turn out to be, the company scheduled a press conference for the announcement—to be transmitted using the product itself—and invited all interested parties to attend, which we did.

Unlike any other IP-based video conferencing and/or desktop-and-document sharing application, Dimdim does not require that users download and install a software client. You just drop a URL to a “meeting room” into your browser, and you’re in the meeting.

According to Dimdim cofounder and CEO DD Ganguly, since Dimdim was launched as a private beta offering at DEMO Fall, last September, it has been adopted—or at least tried out—by about 375,000 people all over the world. He attributes this rapid uptake to the simplicity (it works on any computer), reliability, and low cost of the service.

In fact, we viewed the audio/video/instant messaging/screen-sharing event using Dimdim Free, which, as the name suggests, costs nothing at all, while supporting up to 20 participants.

The audio quality was excellent in terms of quality and continuity, but audio volume balance between Mr. Ganguly (in Boston) and Chief Marketing Officer Steve Chazin, who chaired the session in San Francisco, was way out of whack. Video of Ganguly was crisp and almost real-time. The whiteboarding worked flawlessly, as we got Ganguly’s basic marketing slide show.

After the formal presentation, visitors were invited to IM questions to Mr. Chazin in SF, who relayed them, vocally, to Mr. Ganguly on the East Coast. Public and private IM are usually available to all participants during sessions.

The United Nations and Amnesty International are among the global organizations now using Dimdim, as is a major U.S. university, which has made the service available to the entire faculty and student body. There has also been extensive uptake in the distance learning community, including moodle.com.

Ganguly stressed two special deployments during the press conference. One, in Texas, involves lengthy (five-hour) online seminars in Christian homemaking, attended by what Ganguly characterized as “soccer moms” sitting in their living rooms. In the other, a financial services company has embedded Dimdim’s chat screen on their website, so customers can get direct, live input from tax advisors.

Dimdim Free is available for signup here. It provides desktop sharing, document sharing, video broadcasting, multi-way VoIP audio conferencing, instant messaging, and shared whiteboards with annotation tools. Dimdim pro is a more robust version of the service and can scale up to 100 participants per session. Pricing starts at $99 per year. Dimdim Enterprise can support up to 1,000 participants per session and enables multiple simultaneous meetings.

In addition to making the source code available to the open-source community, Dimdim is providing open APIs so encourage development of additional functionality and integration.

National coalition promotes collaboration to better serve needy

By Dennis Sadowski
Catholic News Service

WASHINGTON (CNS) — Competitive and territorial barriers that once kept Catholic agencies from working too closely together are slowly breaking down in communities across the country in favor of stronger collaboration to better serve clients in need, according to a national organization that promotes the benefits of cooperation among church-based ministries.

Cleveland-based Ministering Together has embarked on a new campaign to promote collaboration among Catholic Charities systems, Catholic hospitals, parishes and Catholic social service agencies as well as public entities in serving and advocating for families and sick, homeless, mentally ill and elderly people in need of multiple services.

“The whole premise is built on the fact that we cannot do alone as well as what we can do together, and that we can serve God’s people to a greater degree if you break down silos and look at the person as a whole person,” said Sister Judith Ann Karam, president of the Cleveland-based Sisters of Charity Health System and a member of Ministering Together’s executive committee.

“It’s all about the people we’re serving,” she told Catholic News Service.

Missions Partnering [WorldconneX :: Blogs]

Individuals, churches, institutions and agencies are demonstrating new passion to collaborate and partner for the cause of Christ. The framework of working together covers a broad spectrum. Some form official partnerships in which participants make specific commitments to each other. Others collaborate around specific tasks or projects so that volunteer contributions can strengthen each other. Others form loose networks that nurture communication and relationships out of which partnering initiatives can emerge.

Partnering relationships sometimes form between individuals. Paul and Titus are two such individuals. Paul refers to Titus as his “partner” (koinonos) and “fellow worker” (sunergos). The term Paul chose for Titus is perhaps the best for understanding the partner relationship. It is the root word for koinonia, that unique bond of heart relationship experienced among fellow believers.

Basic Networking Tips from Missions Catalyst

Missions Catalyst e-Magazine - April 23, 2008 - Resource Reviews | Take It Global
Basic Networking Tips

Some of the most interesting events are not publicly advertised, including those that provide the chance to network and discuss strategies with others who share your interest in ministry in a specific country or area. Attending such a gathering may help you identify great ministry opportunities and keep you from making costly mistakes. So how are you going to find these events and make the most of them?

1. Explore. If theres a country or people group on your heart, ask the most knowledgeable people you know if there is a time and place when those who share your interest get together. Ask them how to get an invitation.

2. Prepare. Similarly, if you plan to attend a missions event and want to make the most of it, try to learn in advance who else may be attending. Consider contacting several of these folks before or at the beginning of the event to see if you can schedule some time together, perhaps for coffee or a meal. Your treat, of course

3. Pay attention. Bring a notebook and be prepared to write down ideas and information you want to remember or pass along to others.

4. Be available. Rather than arriving late, leaving early, or trying to keep up with other responsibilities during the event, make the most of it by being available to pursue the divine opportunities God brings your way And of course, pray and ask him to do just that.
